WHEN TO TAG UP OR GO HALF WAY

Tagging up from 1st to 2nd

Tagging up from 2nd to 3rd

No outs: Tagging up. Priority is to advance a base. There is less urgency to score with many outs left. If we can tag up and get to third, the fielders may play in which leads to better chances of a hit. Fielders may play back then easy score on a tag up.

1 out: Going half way. The Priority is to score. Tagging will only get the base runner to third, then there will be 2 outs and inning over on next out leaving the base runner on third stranded. When going half way you are watching the outfielder like a hawk. If the outfielder is has his feet under him waiting for the ball then be ready to retreat back to 2nd in order to not get thrown out. If the outfielder is still pursuing the ball then be ready to run. Position back from the baseline in order to round third easier.

2 out: No tagging up or half way. There are 2 outs, if the ball is caught the inning is over. The base runner is running full speed trying to score in case of an error.
