FIELDING POP FLYS BEST PRACTICES

General practices

Always using footwork to target catching with face behind the glove.

Run through the ball.

Run with glove by side, glove up at the last second.

Running with head steady.

Unlike an infielder, freeze until you can correctly track the ball. Turn (based on batter orientation), get into an athletic stance, then react once the ball trajectory is determined.

Never back peddle, always make full flips

Shallow overhead fly balls

Left to right transitioning is done facing the ball. Focus keeping head steady during the field facing flip.

Straight overhead deep fly balls

Pick a side to run back based on the batter orientation. Lefty turn right, righty turn left. This is done because of the tailing action of the ball coming off the bat reducing the need to flip mid run. Catch the ball while turned but still with face behind glove unless you can get there way ahead of time. If a change of direction is needed, flip facing away from the ball towards the fence. Focus on head speed and positioning during the flip.
